I believe Cynara was once owned by Sir Winston Churchill.
Is this true ?

Rumour in Japan is that the Ketch Cynara belonged to Winston Churchill. The Cynara itself doesn't have a log. It doesn't have a certificate to prove Churchill's ownership. Is there anyone out there who knows if Churchill ever owned this ketch or was a frequent passenger?

Cynara was owned by my grandfather in the 50s and 60s. I had never heard that Churchill owned it, so I'm sure it's just a rumour. Does anyone know where it is in Japan?

Thank you Anonymous. Do you know who and when your grandfather bought it from and to whom and when did he sell it? The Cynara is in Japanese waters. It's being taken good care of. I have been on board a couple of times and I am interested to know something of its history, particularly as to how the rumour could have started. Any information would be very much appreciated.

Glad to hear she is in good hands. Are there any other pictures of her around? I was wrong with my dates - she was bought in the 30s and sold in the early 50s, I don't know who from or who to. I only know that the final straw was when the drunk captain sold all the lead ballast one winter. No idea how the Churchill rumour started.

This is fascinating - as far as I know cynara was not owned by Winston Churchill - she was owned by my grandfather - Sir Howard Frank in the 1930s. I believe in the 1960s she was owned by Duncan Hamilton - who was also a very close friend of my father's - who spent several lovely holidays in the south of france on her.

I have unravelled the complete ownership history of Cynara including the possible origin of the name. Winston Churchill doesn't show up in the records. All those who have claimed on these pages that their grandfather at one time owned Cynara have been proved correct. Unrefutable documenatry evidence exists. Cynara is being put up for sale.
